Connie Carpenter-Phinney & Davis Phinney Special Edition
This pair of special edition wool jerseys pay tribute to Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter-Phinney, the all-American cycling couple whose hundreds of professional victories include national, world and Olympic titles. The Davis Phinney Foundation’s motto, ‘Every Victory Counts’, is printed inside the collars and custom zip pullers represent the medals they both won in L.A. in 1984.
Along with the jerseys release on September 5th, a film by Ben Ingham will premier on rapha.cc which documents their journey to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and deals with Davis’s subsequent experiences of living with Parkinson’s disease.
Following Davis’s diagnosis the couple established the Davis Phinney Foundation in 2004, an organization that has raised millions of dollars for Parkinson’s disease research. With the release of these two jerseys, Rapha is contributing 10% of the proceeds to the foundation’s ongoing work. You can learn more at www.davisphinneyfoundation.org
Rapha worked closely with Davis and Connie and the designs of the jerseys take prompts from the racing jerseys the pair wore in competition. Connie spent more time than any other American woman in a US National Champion Jersey and Davis was a local hero at the Coors International Bicycle Classic, America’s preeminent road race of the 1980’s. Connie also won a Gold medal in the first-ever Olympic Road Race. Davis was fifth in the Men’s Road Race, later winning the Bronze Model in the Team Time Trial.
Each jersey retails for $250 and comes in gender-specific sizes from XS to XL (plus an XXL for men only). Connie’s Inside Story label (sewn into the right rear pocket) tells of how sprint coaching from Davis helped her win the Olympic road race. Other key features include three cargo pockets, zipped valuables pocket and reflective detailing
Davis’s jersy design references the leader’s jersey from the Coors International Bicycle Classic, (1980-1988 and at one time the fourth largest stage race in the world). Davis won the final running of the race in 1988. His Inside Story label (sewn into the right rear pocket) tells a tale of Phinney family racing exploits.
Each special edition jersey comes with an Inside Story label sewn on the inside of a pocket.
