Bontrager has expanded its Aeolus road wheel line with new carbon wheelsets designed to bring Aeolus performance to a wider range of riders at lower price points. The new Aeolus Pro 3 TLR comes in rim and disc brake versions and sells for $1200. Both wheelsets feature Bontrager’s TLR system for easy tubeless conversion. Previous versions of Aeolus wheels have been used everywhere from WorldTour time trials to the UCI Cyclocross World Championships.
RoadBikeReview just took delivery of a test set of the rim brake wheels, which have a total actual weight of 1510 grams (850g rear/650g front). The included alloy skewers add another 136 grams, and if you want to go tubeless, the included rim strips are 120 grams a pair.
Bontrager says it took the shape of the existing 35mm deep Aeolus 3 and added a textured carbon brake track that increases stopping power and efficiently dissipates heat. Bontrager three-pawl hubs aim to provide consistent engagement.
Other touted features include a D3 profile (aka dual directional design) that’s claimed to cut drag at the tire-leading and rim-leading edge. The 35mm depth OCLV carbon rim (27mm outer, 19.5mm inner width) is laced with DT Aerolite spokes and Alpina locking nipples. A stacked lacing alignment provides a better spoke bracing angle for a stiffer wheel. Quick release Bontrager three pawl hubs have 24 points of engagement and are compatible with Shimano 10/11 speed and SRAM 10/11 freehubs. (Sorry, Campy fans.)
The disc brake wheels carry forward the same features and utilize center lock disc hubs with 12mm thru-axle front and rear. Both wheelsets come with tubeless rim strips, tubeless valves, a valve core removal tool, Black Prince carbon brake pads, and a traditional rim strip.
