The notion of being able to talk to your riding buddies when out of earshot is an interesting one. On one hand, it’d be nice to know that the person who hasn’t come down the trail or road yet is just dealing with a flat tire, and not lying unconscious after crashing. You could also talk a little smack, say after you dropped your riding partner on the steep part of your local climb. On the other hand, don’t we ride bikes to get away from technology — and just spend a little quiet time in our own heads?
The answer to that question will be highly personal and go a long way in dictating your interest in Bonx Grip, a new Bluetooth-enabled earpiece that connects to a smartphone app to facilitate group conversation, which only transmits sound when a user speaks.
Dual microphones with multilayer wind and noise reduction technology ensure clear speech, and there is no distance limit, thanks to data transmission over standard cellular networks, claims Bonx. (Yes, you need a cell signal for it to work.) It’s also water and shock-resistant, and designed to stay put during rigorous outdoor activities. The Bonx Grip is available in three different sized earbuds and four colors.
Bonx, a Japan-based company, see the ideal user of the device as cyclists, runners, climbers, snowboarders/skiers, hikers, stand-up paddle boarders, or anyone else who pursues outdoor activity in a group.
“I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if we could have real-time communication for outdoor activities,” explained Bonx CEO Takahiro Miyasaka, an avid snowboarder who’d become frustrated with the current status of communication while snowboarding with his friends

Right now the Bonx Grip is in the crowdfunding stage, but it’s already met with wide interest back home in Japan. Now the company is offering the product to U.S. consumers via a just-launched Indiegogo campaign. Bonx expects to be shipping to American backers in Q4 2016. It sells for a suggested retail price of $139.
