Just ahead of the start of the Tour of California, Diamondback Bicycles has launched a redesigned version of its Podium line of road bikes, which will officially debut under the Optum Pro Cycling Team during the eight-day race.
Created in collaboration with the team, Diamondback says the bike is new in every aspect. Using computer modeling, wind tunnel testing, and real world input, the new bike takes cues from the recently-released Diamondback time trial frame, the Serios.

The end goal was to create an aero road frame that would perform whether out on a short training ride or racing a grueling mountain stage. The end result is bike claimed to be 100 grams lighter than its predecessor, while also increasing stiffness, and netting a 50 percent aero efficiency improvement across all yaw angles.
“We set out to create the best race bike possible using input from our sponsored teams and keeping the end user in mind,” said Michael Brown, Diamondback’s director of product. “An aero bike can offer benefits in cheating the wind, but a more well-rounded approach that emphasizes compliance and light weight is much better for the rider than simply trying to make the fastest bike in a wind tunnel.”
On the manufacturing side, Diamondback says it was in full control of the process from beginning to end. Utilizing their AMMP SLP process, the new bike uses a combination of unidirectional and woven carbon to improve strength, weight, and stiffness. Unidirectional is used as much as possible, with weaves for reinforcement and extra strength without extra weight.
Diamondback also says it entered the Podium project with a clean slate and open mind to feedback from the riders of Optum Pro Cycling. Working closely with the team was a strategic goal for maximizing the bike’s performance. So far so good: The team has already been winning on it in the 2015 season, including Phil Gaimon’s win at Redlands Classic and several stages of the Tour de Gila.
Other frame highlights include fully internal cable routing, carbon dropouts and a 27.2mm seatpost for improved compliance. The new bike will be offered in three builds: The Podium Equipe with a full Shimano Dura Ace mechanical groupset and HED Jet 4 SCT clincher wheels ($7500); the Ultegra-equipped Podium Vitesse ($4500); and the Podium E’Tape with Shimano 105 ($2700).
