All set for the second edition of the 2011 GRAN FONDO USA Series, returning to Philadelphia this week-end! Last year, more than 1700 cyclists of all abilities took part in this exciting Italian-themed event. Distinctive touches of the Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia include the Ferrari and Maserati luxury cars on display at the Expo (Saturday and Sunday) and leading the way the day of the event (Start on Sunday, August 14). A superb helicopter made by Augusta Westland will also salute the riders as they begin their course of choice: a 108 mile, 73 mile or a 33 mile route, all significant from a historical point of view and heading through lush woodlands, charming villages, and river-views in the region, known for its important role in the American Colonies’ fight for independence.
Participating teams include: Alitalia and Augusta. Also noteworthy the participation of kids and chaperons of Philadelphia’s own Cadence Cycling Foundation, a non-profit created by Jay Snider (past president of the Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Team) through his bike shop in Manayunk (Cadence). The group is directed by Ryan Oelkers (an ex-pro) and most of them are technically promising young riders. The Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia supports also the Kisses for Kyle Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting local families in the Delaware Valley whose children (from birth through age 21) are battling childhood cancer.
City Representatives will be in attendance, as well as the Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia, Hon. Luigi Scotto and Italian Parliament representative (and Philadelphia resident), Hon. Amato Berardi.
