One trick that I found after having difficulties pumping air into my Presta valve tubes was to let a good bit of the air out of the tubes before trying to pump air into the tires. There will be less resistance to overcome in the tiny valve stem and even smaller valve core, meaning you will be less likely to bend or break those parts and out on a ride instead of replacing a useless tube while your cycling buddies ride off without you!
