PowerTap has rolled out a new disc version of its hub-based power meter, the G3 Rear Disc Hub. The longtime Wisconsin-based power meter maker claims its latest offering saves 180 grams over its predecessor thanks to a smaller and sleeker design. Claimed weight is 500 grams, 350 grams for the hub, 150 grams for the proprietary 160mm rotor that has a larger bolt circle than standard issue rotors.
The G3 Disc Hub comes in 24- and 28-hole options, and is available as 142x12mm thru axle or 135mm quick release. Connectivity is via ANT + or Bluetooth. The 6-pawl freehub is compatible with Shimano, SRAM and XD driver bodies. Accommodation for straight pull spokes and a wider flange design lends itself to better power transfer and improved wheel stiffness, says PowerTap.
PowerTap is marketing this meter toward the dirt crowd, be that mountain bike or cyclocross. We figure the later is where the main interest will be, though some will deem the 160mm rotor overkill for ’cross.
Price is $990 and the new hub is available for purchase on-line at powertap.com.
