Pro Bike: Alberto Contador’s Specialized Tarmac SL4

Feature Articles Road Bike Video

We won’t know for sure until racing kicks off at the upcoming 100th running of the Tour de France, but top GC contender Alberto Contador will likely be aboard his Specialized Tarmac SL4 with SRAM Red groupset and Zipp 202 wheels as he chases yellow jersey glory.

Throughout the tour, Contador will have his choice between the more aero Specialized Venge and the all-around Tarmac, but it was the Tarmac that the Spaniard preferred during the recently completed Critérium du Dauphiné, a key weeklong stage race that serves as warm-up for the world’s most important bike race.

The bike shown here is his spare bike, which is identical to his race bike in every way, save for the lack of an SRM power meter and a number plate. Both primary and spare bike are spec’d with 10-speed SRAM Red, as none of the pros are yet to move onto new Red 22 11-speed groupsets.

Other highlights of this build include bar tape that is super-glued instead of using electrical tape, blue hoods to match the colors of his Saxo-Tinkoff team, a Prologo Nego Evo saddle, carbon Look pedals, and Zipp Service Course SL bars and stem. Gearing is standard 53×39 with an 11-28 cassette. Weight is right at the UCI minimum of 14.9 pounds, meaning team mechanics likely had to add some weight just to stay within the rules.

Here’s a tip-to-tail look at the bike that just might win the next Tour de France.
