The Rapha Outskirts Collection

Exploration and adventure come naturally when bicycling miles and miles through the Vietnam countryside. There are few places that present such a spectacular environment for the adventure cyclist.  The searing heat and mainly unmade roads that thread through thick jungle mean that riding a bike there is almost unheard of. But for those who do, the rewards are breathtaking. This is a country abundant with wildlife and wonderful vistas.

The Outskirts collection is designed for exploration by bike and inspired by Lachlan and Angus Morton who have made adventure riding something of a pastime, with Lachlan recently winning the tough GBduro, a 2,000km race along dirt tracks from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Angus, meanwhile has crossed the US on Route 66, rode through Northeastern Canada on the TransLabrador Highway, and discovered the furthest reaches of the Balkans on a bike.

The Australian siblings created the Thereabouts and Outskirts series of films, which began with a ride into the Australian outback and was followed by rides across mountain ranges in the US, South America, and Europe, each time persuading a group of friends to join them. Theirs are lives lived on bikes, and their enthusiasm for the road less traveled is infectious.

Their latest trip, however, would test the most seasoned adventure cyclist. But, really, that was their dream. Riding the length of a country with many untouched trails and backroads in temperatures consistently tipping 30+ degrees with 100% humidity pushes the boundaries of adventure.

The brothers’ journey from Hanoi in the North to Ho Chi Minh City in the South with their lifelong friend Pat Drapac took them along trails and roads that were nothing more than goat-tracks to tiny hamlets and introduced them to one of the richest cultures in the world.

The Outskirts collection was designed for exactly this type of adventure, with products informed by multi-day adventures in hot and humid conditions. On trips like these, comfort, breathability and protection are critical.

Core Cargo Bib Shorts form the foundation of the collection and feature a Vietnam-inspired design. Limited-edition long and short sleeve technical t-shirts in high-wicking fabrics provide loose-fitting cover for the top-half while an extremely lightweight wind jacket, a cotton t-shirt, caps and a hip flask inspired by their journey round off the collection.

Rapha Outskirts Collection Highlights:

For the Outskirts Tour of Vietnam Rapha found silk was the perfect solution to the requirements for a flyweight wind jacket, making it light and incredibly soft on the skin. Then, working with the Morton brothers Rapha used an adaptive dyeing process to create a unique pattern on each jacket. To maintain shape Rapha added a corded collar and zip placket and incorporated a drop shoulder for better comfort on the bike. Puckered seams and elasticated cuffs allow for arm adjustment, pockets for essentials and reflective details for all-round visibility.

Designed for exploring by bike free from the confines of a traditional jersey, they feature a gradient knit structure that not only wicks sweat away from the skin but also disperses the moisture over a greater area, creating an incredibly fast-drying shirt. The sleeves turn up to reveal reflective stripes under the hem and the logos are reflective for better visibility.

The Outskirts long-sleeved t-shirt features logos and prints inspired by places the Outskirts crew visited along the way and has been given a tie-dye effect that references Lachlan’s style sensibilities. The T-shirt is made from a gradient knit structure that not only wicks sweat away from the skin but also disperses the moisture over a greater area. The printed logos are also reflective to improve visibility.

On long-distance cycling trips, you can never have too many pockets. The Rapha Core Cargo bibs feature mesh pockets on the legs for small items you might want to get to in a hurry as well as two additional pockets for you to tuck things away under your t-shirt. Lachlan Morton chose the Core Cargo bibs for the Outskirts tour of Vietnam. His limited edition version features an iridescent bib section and reflective applications. Made of a supportive, dense-knit fabric with fewer seams around the waist, the Core Cargo Bibs are durable and comfortable.

The Outskirts Graphic T-shirt is made from soft cotton and features graphics inspired by the Vietnam adventure, with a simple back and chest motif that references the trip. Available in cool white and ideal for relaxing after a day’s riding. The back hem is dropped for added comfort on the bike.

It’s nice to have something to look forward to after a long, hot day in the saddle. The Rapha Pitskirts hip flask is designed to carry just enough cheer to make those post-ride moments around the campfire that little bit more comfortable. Ergonomically shaped to sit flush against the body, the Outskirts hip flask features a good luck motif inspired by the Outskirts Tour of Vietnam.
