Review: ROL D’Huez wheels

ROL D'Huez Wheels

Steelman Eurocross bike equipped with Rol D’Huez wheels.

ROL sent us their D’Huez wheels for test and we were excited to try these wheels that are highly revered in the user reviews and forums areas. Year after year, they continue to impress our users with great value at $800 and outstanding performance rivaling other more expensive wheelsets.

We got the the 24/28 version, the big brother to the D’Huez 20/24H where they added four more spokes, front and rear, for increased durability and stiffness. Built for more aggressive or larger riders and unforgiving roads, the D’Huez 24/28H wheelset still exhibits excellent strength to weight ratio. Our test rider is only 150 lbs without much sprinting power but we put this wheelset through many dirt roads and trails so the added strength was welcome.

Like its sibling, the D’Huez 24/28H features industry standard DT Swiss Aerolite spokes and their own spoke-coddling hubs for longevity. It’s also tubeless compatible though it seems like not many road riders are taking advantage of that to date.

So we mounted the wheels on our trusty Steelman Eurocross bike and put on about 20 rides on the wheels. We’ve installed both Panaracer’s Gravel tires and Challenge’s new Gravel Grinder tires. The 22.5 mm rim width gave the tires a nice stance and the wheels spun perfectly true and smooth.

The wheels feel secure and balanced on the road where they perform very well in cornering and climbing. On the trail we’ve given it quite a beating and the wheels are not really bothered at all. The wheels are dead-on true and the bearings are now smoother than when they started. The ratchet has performed precisely with no pops or clicks. On rough terrain, the wheels feel very secure without feeling harsh. It’s difficult to tell of course since we’re using bigger tires with slightly lower pressures but we’re confident that we’ve found a good tool for our many upcoming mixed terrain adventures.

After a few hundred miles on the new D’huez wheelset, its clear that my next wheelset will be another purchase from Rolwheels. I am very happy with the product especially with the ease of acceleration when attacking/bridging. The wheels also handle well in cross winds which is important for me as a lighter rider in the pack. These are the two criteria I was looking for and these wheels are 10 out of 10 in these areas. The D’huez is exactly what I needed. The 23mm tire on the front feels so good I’m planning to go skinny 23mm on the back when the 25mm wears out. I have also noticed a bunch of other riders using Rolwheels around Washington, DC, now I know why.
