Salsa Warroad

The Salsa Warroad is a new endurance all-road line from the gravel grinding lovers that are part of the QBP empire. The bike features endurance road geometry, interchangeable wheel sizes, and full-fender capability.

Salsa Warroad

The focus of the Salsa Warroad line is agility, power, and comfort. The full carbon frame features a vibration reduction system and sculpted bottom bracket with 12x142 rear spacing.

For ease of maintenance and set up, the Salsa Warroad frameset has full sleeved internal cable routing, and for those that like to get gnarly on your road rides, the Warroad is dropper post compatible.

The full carbon frame utilizes flat mount disc brakes, and tire clearance is a generous 700x35 or 650x2.1 with full fenders. Like most Salsa frames, the Warroad fits a variety of racks for touring or back roads bike packing.

Salsa Warroad

The Salsa Warroad has a 71-degree head tube angle making it the most aggressive bike in the current Salsa line up. A 51mm fork offset and 415mm chainstay length are aimed to give the Warroad fast pedaling response and nimble handling.

Warroad Genesis

Salsa Warroad

Product Manager Joe Meiser and some of the Salsa crew would regularly embark on big road rides in early spring and deep summer just for the fun of it, and almost always in pursuit of the best coffee and pastries in some far-flung rural town. As Meiser puts it:

"[product design engineer] Sean Mailen, myself and a few others used to plan these monstrous routes where we would explore rural roads out of Minneapolis. The midway point almost always included coffee and pastries to refuel for the return trip and a warm respite for our water bottles and toes to thaw out."

These all-day rides often started on pavement but covered all kinds of terrain as the miles ticked on: "Sean dubbed a ride we did to Red Wing the 'Cannonball Run'. It was a 120+ mile route that crossed the Cannon River on a decommissioned road bridge that involved some scrambling while carrying your bike. The ride hit pavement, gravel, two-track and singletrack before the river crossing and then spit us out onto a rail trail littered with spring ice melt for the last couple of miles into Red Wing for the half-way bakery stop."

Needless to say, the rides were taxing. Enough that the Salsa team wondered if there was a way to have their cinnamon roll and eat it, too. Aside from the colorful stories these rides often generated, their product and design teams came away with a thought: What if there was a road bike that behaved like a road bike when you needed it to, but could take on unmaintained surfaces with the same aggressive performance and a little added comfort for all-day rides?

Salsa Warroad

The answer was yes. The new Warroad line offers builds in both double and 1x drivetrain options, including SRAM Force CX1, Shimano Ultegra, and even a value-packed Shimano Tiagra offering. Both 650b and 700c wheel sizes are available. Parts spec includes WTB goodies and Salsa branded stem and seatpost combos.

The intent of the Warroad is as an endurance road bike that can also explore gravel. This contrasts with the Salsa Warbird, which is aimed directly at gravel racing thanks to its longer wheelbase that is not quite as nimble at the Warroad. Indeed, the Warroad has a slightly steeper head tube angle (71-degrees vs. 70.7), lower bottom bracket (by 2mm), and shorter chainstays (by 15mm).

The Warroad is also torsionally stiffer at the bottom bracket junction, head tube, seat stays, and chainstays. This stiffer ride gives up some of the compliance and comfort that is a trademark on the Warbird, but gains pedaling efficiency and quicker handling.

Available sizes are 49cm, 52.5cm, 54.5cm, 56cm, 57.5cm, 59cm, and 61cm. Claimed frameset weight is 4 lb. 2 oz including fork, axles, headset, and seatpost collar.
