The Presidents Cup, a golf tournament held every two years, pits the top players from the United States against an International Team of the best golfers outside of Europe. For over 20 years, the tournament has attracted golf’s brightest stars as it’s moved throughout the world. (The U.S. dominated this year, by the way.)
It’s a long-standing tradition for the captains of the United States team to present players with a gift that embodies the captain’s native region and reflects their personal interests. So, when long-standing PGA Tour professional, fitness enthusiast, and Madison, Wisconsin, native Steve Stricker was named as the captain of the 2017 U.S. Team, he turned to Trek to collaborate and create something special.
“When it came time to find the perfect gift for this year’s Cup, I wanted something that players could actually get out and use but that also featured a creative design,” explained Stricker. “The opportunity to work with Trek to create one-of-a-kind bikes fit this desire perfectly, and seeing my ideas come to life on the bikes was an awesome experience.”
Stricker chose the new Trek FX Sport—a flat bar fitness bike — as a template to create a unique bike for this year’s Presidents Cup. After selecting the model, he worked directly with Trek graphic designer Brian Lindstrom to give the bike a uniquely American flair that would also commemorate the flavor of the Presidents Cup.
The scheme features a base of deep navy blue that matches the uniforms golfers wore while competing at New Jersey’s Liberty National Golf Course. With lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty as the course’s backdrop, Lindstrom finished the bike’s top tube with the course’s logo, each team member’s name, and a depiction of the Presidents Cup itself.
An eagle located on the back of the seat tube is perhaps the most interesting and unique graphic element featured in the design. Inspired by the presidential seal, Lindstrom replaced arrows and olive branches with three golf clubs.
“I’ve worked on a number of different athletes’ bikes, but this is the first one I’ve ever done specifically with golf in mind,” said Lindstrom. “It’s been really fun to work with Steve and help bring his vision to life. He wanted something simple and elegant that was also functional and personal, and I think he made a great choice.”
The bikes were presented to the players just before the start of the 2017 Presidents Cup tournament. FX Sport is available now through trekbikes.com and at Trek retailers.
