We got a sneak peek at the new Pinarello K8-S that Team Sky rode for Paris-Roubaix and other Spring Classics last month.
In this new video, Pinarello gives us a much more detailed view of the complete suspension system that provides 10mm of rear travel. Now 10mm of travel may not seem like much, especially if you ride mountain bikes, but this soft-tail must strike a different balance between comfort and efficiency. Besides the elastomer shock itself, the testing and manufacturing of the complete frame are featured. Of course, to match the travel of the shock, compliance must be built into the chainstays as well since there is no pivot. Pinarello’s deep knowledge of carbon layups allow them to tune the stays as needed.
As previously mentioned, the Pinarello Dogma K8-S was developed in partnership with Team Sky car sponsor, Jaguar. Claimed frame weight is 990 grams (size 53cm). For comparison, the flagship Dogma F8 race bike comes in at 860 grams.
With such a unique bike as this, the shock is the highlight. The shock has two main parts – a piston and an elastomer bumper to dampen road noise. Different elastomers can be used (firmer or softer) depending on the conditions and rider weight. There is also a preload feature via the use of ferrules at the top of the shock to firm things up if need be.
Will we see this technology on other Pinarello models? Will Pinarello license their design to other manufacturers or will other manufacturers attempt to copy this unique design? We will have to wait and see.
