WTF....

Add insult to injury...

I had my tenth anniversary at my employer...which actually turned out to be pretty cool. They provided cake, cookies, food, and beverages.. I got a plaque, a 50 dollar gift card to a restaurant of my choice, and a "service award gift"...choosing between about 120 items..including luggage, diamond earrings, and a grille, which is probably what I am going to get...could use a second one.

But then, there's that second issue. Birthdays haven't bothered me in a long, long time....in fact, I am almost ashamed to admit, I have forgotten my own birthday on at least 3 occasions in the last 8 years....(yes, I am often pretty absent minded, and completely absorbed in my research and school, a fact that pretty much drives my wife absolutely F'ing crazy)

But this 40th thing is kinda bothering me...and to be honest, I've been thinking about it for the past 2 days, and I can't figure out why. Some of the nurses have even commented that I seem crabbier (than usual at least. I'm not called Dr Cox at work for no reason) and a little down....

WTF? Is it just a thing? Will it pass?

When I had my 40th (which wasn't long ago), I just said to myself, "40 is the new 30."

For some reason, that made me feel better. Also helped that I don't look my age (good genes, thanks mom n' dad).

I think it worked 'cuz it's obviously somewhat true. Ppl are marrying later, starting families later, lifespans are increasing. Don't have to tell you that, considering your profession. 40 is now halftime in the game of life, might be late second quarter soon, god knows what 20 years from now.

In any case, it wasn't something that bothered me much, or for long.

Ah... Been here done this!

This too will pass... I turned 40, 20 years ago tomorrow! Now, would gladly be 40 again. Life was good, business was good and Parky wasn't an issue.

We are all on this same path and it's what you can glean from the experience and what you do with what you have is important... the rest in moot! Don't worry! Instead look at it as a milestone. And what what you have learned and know now as a result of the passage is who you are. Life, regardless of the circumstances, is a marvelous thing. Enjoy every moment of it! Including the birthdays... they just represent mileage and wisdom earned!

Cheers! EDB

Absolutely. After a couple of months, you won't even think about it- except when your friends bring up how old you are.

But 40? You're just a baby- wait until you hit 50 (voice of experience speaking here) :D

Sometimes we all hit points where we realize we are aging. We realize that maybe we thought life would be different than it is when you reach a certain age. Sounds like you hit one of those points. Pretty normal.

40 is one of those for most. It represents the half way point. The start ( for some) of the downhill slide.

But it doesn't have to be that way. It can be a realization that you still have at least the same amount of time left.......think of all the experiences you've had so far......think of how many more you can have. It's a half empty/ half full thing.

Things of quality have no fear of time.
