I am coming to vegas for work and looking for places to ride. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews of rt 159 from great ride with wide shoulders to really unsafe. I know some effort has been made to make it safer. What is the status? I was thinking that doing that with the red rock loop road might make a really nice early morning or evening ride.

Any other recommendations on a 40 mile or so loop or even out and back? At what time does the temp start coming down? (I have to work most mornings, but have afternoons and evenings free and will be bringing lights.)

159 isn't as bad as 160 (160 is horrible). If you start in the Red Rock Station (casino) and ride out into Red Rock Canyon, do the scenic loop, ride to Blue Diamond (reload at the general store) and then head back the way you rode in (minus the Scenic Loop) you'd be in for a good 30+ mile ride with some brutal climbing. If you've already been here -- sorry for the late reply. If not, our temps have been really nice lately with the monsoonal moisture keeping temps right around 100 during the day and cooling quickly in the late afternoon (still not cool -- but definately nice enough to ride).

The complete 40 mile loop is crazy (imho) right now -- the growth along 160 has not been kept up with by NDOT and people can't seem to obey traffic laws or common sense. People are running stop signs and pulling into moving traffic without looking or waiting for a chance -- many collisions right now. Be carefull and contain your rides to the 159. Once NDOT widens the road to 4 or 6 lanes, adds multiple stop lights and adds bike lanes I won't ride out there. For now I get good rides in on some very nice residential streets in the Green Valley, South Las Vegas, Anthem and Seven Hills areas -- easy for 30-50 miles and upto 2500 feet of climbing with little overlap of roads.

if you go out to 160 and go left up podesi it is not that bad at all.and it adds another climb. once you reach the top by bikers bar you need to turn around and come back. dont try and go over the hill to the other side. bad juju. another good ride is to go out to the park and do the lake loop. great shop for further info and too hook up with riders at is PROCYCLERY.
