Recently 4 of us rode the C&O from Cumberland MD to Washington DC. It was a great trip. Hard for me because I am out of shape. Round is a shape right? We did it in 3 days, 64 miles,72 miles and 48. Not to mention a few side trips..If you have any questions feel free to ask.

By the we camped and ate what we brought every day.. Only one trip to town for us.

What did you use for a camera? I used an Olympus E500, Ebay under $300 DSLR

Would you do the ride again? Yes, after some better training and better bike.

What would you do differently? We ate MRE'S we bought out of a camping catalogue. I would have brought better food and more water. We went June the 14th, the weather was great. The water at the camp sites was brown but tasted ok.

Get Fenders for your bike!!! I didn,t and got covered in mud. That was no fun at all.

Don't camp next to a rail way, gets a little noisy at night and you will need your rest.

Only a about 500 feet at the begining and 1000 feet at the end, thats it. All dirt and rock. It is pretty flat. If you start in Cumberland and ride to DC you will drop 500 feet in elevation. So there is some down hill. All in all it is a great ride. Many free camping spots along the way. Not too many accesses to towns though. A lot of people that travel the hole trail stay in hotels and such but we did it the hard way. Camped and carried all our stuff.

The info on the net is nice but not all that acrurate. There are only a few "easy" accses to town along the way. If it were me and you just wanted to ride part of the trail I would start in Harpers Ferry

Here is a link to a good Towpath web site. It will help you prepare.

I've ridden chunks of this a few times when I've taken my Boy Scout Troop up there. Parts of that ride, especially by the falls, are just beautiful. Lot's of camping spots. I've always wanted to do a multi-day trip on the canal. You've given me some inspiration.

I think you can take the C&O canal and another and get yourself all the way to Pittsburgh, if I'm not mistaken.

MRE's - tasty, but they're awfully heavy.

Nice pics - thanks for posting.

BTW thanks for posting this.
Out of desperation on my last day leaving when I did it last year - I had to fill my water bottle from the pump.

I SWEAR, it had taken me 6 months to get that FOUL taste out of my water bottle. Numerous dish washings..

It has finally worn out of the bottle, and it ALMOST out of the cap .. I can still tell which cap it was.

I think we were fine with the filter and the taste.. can't remember.

Sometimes the sites were spaced out and made for a never ending ride into the green !!

All in all it was a great trip. I recommend it for everyone.
At the old oven place, I was waiting up for someone who I think had a flat.

Anyways, some kid was walking up there with his dad and dog.

Next thing you know the kid is SCREAMING HIS HEAD OFF.

I thought oh boy, no what. Then he was screaming about being bit.. Crap, a snake??

Turned out to be a bee or hornet.

Whew.

I think "out of shape" is a relative term if you can do a ride like that loaded down and running on MRE's. Pretty amazing ride and great pictures. I'm jealous.

I've done that trip a couple times and really want to do it again. I agree on the taste of the water; I mixed in lots of gatorade.
Great picts. I never managed to catch a deer with the camera. Question; about where is picture #7 taken; I don't recognize that.

How did you like the detour? Did you do any fishing? We had some nice fishing the last time.

Did you have a favorite spot?
