tossing around the thought of either building up an old MTB for around town cruising or purchasing a fixed road rig?

I'm thinking that after I purchase the parts for the MTB I can probably pick up a Fixed that will allow me to train for the roady in me as well. Issues at hand are that I am about 250 so I need something that is strong.

I've never been on a fixed so most likely will start with a flip/flop and start with the single. looking for sub $500's (the lower the better)

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Do you want to build one up or buy used?

There are a lot of used fixed gear bikes on the market, on craigslist and ebay in particular.

Most "track" bikes run 36 spokes, so that should help.

I was about 270 when I started riding riding track. I bought some Deep V's and the rear one just the other day went out of true due to another cyclist scraping me and braking a spoke.

Mine are the 32hole ones. And for reference, I am 220lbs now and have had the Velocitys for a year.
