You're right, unfortunately

I had a really bad crash the day after my 55th birthday, and was off the bike for five months. In four months, I was back riding with my regular group, but definitely not pushing the pace. Then I had surgery to make more repairs, and was off the bike again for another month. I'm still not back to where I was before the crash, but am getting better and faster. I am a LOT more critical about poor bike handling in the paceline.

BS, IMHO. I broke my leg and was on crutches almost 2 months, spent another month doing nothing but very light trainer and elliptical excercise. When I got back on the bike, I wouldn't have won any races, but I still had the fitness to cover the same ground I was accustomed too, just a little slower. A couple more months to get it all back. I was 35 at the time. I sure hope there's not some big cliff at 40 !

On the other hand, maybe if you don't have as much fitness in the first place, there's not so much to loose!!
