Marcel Kittel took a come-from-behind sprint victory on the final stage of the Tour de France Sunday, overtaking Norwegian Alexander Kristoff on the run to the finish line along the Champs-Élysées. Garmin-Sharp's Ramunas Navardauskas was third in a stage that took 3:20:50 to cover 137.5km.
Following what amounted to a ceremonial parade during the ride from Évry to Paris, the real racing began, with Kittel's Giant-Shimano team helping control the race. The big German did the rest, duplicating his win in Paris a year ago.
Behind the sprinters, Vincenzo Nibali finished safely in the bunch to officially claim the overall title. Nibali's 7:37 margin over second placed Frenchman Jean-Christophe Péraud (Ag2R La Mondiale) was the largest since 1997. The Astana rider is also the first Italian to win the Tour de France since Marco Pantani took the crown in 1998. Nibali also snagged four stage wins and was in the yellow jersey for all but two days of the three-week race.
Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (FDJ.fr) ended up third overall and claimed the white jersey for best young rider. BMC's Tejay van Garderen was the top placed American, taking fifth overall at 11:44.
Peter Sagan (Cannondale) took home the green points despite not winning a single stage, while Tinkoff-Saxo's Rafal Majka took the polka dot climber's jersey and two stage wins.
