Dutchman Lars Boom (Belkin) took the victory in a wild and rainy Stage 5 of the 2014 Tour de France that saw defending champion Chris Froome (Team Sky) abandon the race after crashing twice. Race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) managed the day well, maintaining his race lead and putting significant time into GC rivals, including Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) who lost more than 2 minutes and 40 seconds on the day.
Since its announcement last year, today's route has been a topic of controversy and speculation. The 155km course revisited many of the cobbled sections of Paris-Roubaix-the spring classic that, unlike today, has not seen rain on race day for several years.
Conditions were so bad in advance of today's start that race organizers actually removed two sections of cobbles, but it wasn't enough to keep several contenders for the day and the overall from hitting the deck. Fabian Cancellara (Trek), Contador and American hopeful Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) each found themselves on the ground but would recover to finish.
Defending champion Froome was not so lucky. After recovering from a crash at the 35k mark, Froome and a teammate hit the deck again 85 kilometers into the stage. After a few minutes of pondering a remount, the Brit climbed into the team car and called it a Tour.
