AG2R-Mondiale's Blel Kadri notches the first win for a Frenchman in the 2014 Tour on another challenging day for the riders. Photo by Graham Watson

Frenchman Blel Kadri of the Ag2r-La Mondiale squad brought glory to the home country notching a win on a wet and mountainous Stage 8 of the Tour de France. Italian Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) held on to the yellow leader's jersey despite the attacks of Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) on the day's final climb that saw the Spaniard take back three seconds in the dash to the line some 2 minutes and 17 seconds back of Kadri.

Kadri's decisive move came with about 25 kilometers remaining when he dropped his four breakaway partners in a bid for the solo victory. The determined Frenchman then held off the hard-charging yellow jersey group over the final two climbs.

It was an another awful day for American Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) who crashed again and conceded another minute to the GC contenders just a day after tangling with Simon Gerrans and hitting the deck hard in Stage 7's sprint finish. Now in 16th overall, Talansky's podium hopes are looking cloudy.

Fellow American Tejay van Garderen (BMC) fared better finishing with the yellow jersey group at 2 minutes and 40 seconds adrift of Kadri.
