On a car, when it's a 16 in wheel, the wheel it's self is 16 i n tall.... However, I tryed to fit 26 in roadie tiers on my 26 in MTB wheels.... Not even close!
Aparently on a bike 26in is the diamiter of the tire, not the rim???

The rim diameter is expressed in MM, and is marked on the side of the tire (3 digit number - the ETRTO rim size). MTB tires with decimal sizes (like 26 x 1.5) will not fit on the same rims as tires with fractional sizes (26 x 1 & 1/2). Then there are 650 tires, which are another size. It's all explained here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html
