Does anyone know where I can buy a 36 tooth 135 BCD chainring?

don't believe you can, standard smallest is 39 and going that much smaller wouldnt leave much material

I think you're right on with that. Pretty sure Campy can't go below 39. You can check Speedgoat.com, they generally have a lot of ring options, but I think you may be out of luck. With that, I can't imagine anyone needing smaller than a 39 for cross, whether geared or single.

You need a compact crank to run a chainring smaller than 39T. (130mm BCD cranks can go down to 38T.)

Thanks guys I never thought about but with 135 BCD and a 36 tooth chainring would not have much material to work with. I took one of my old Record cranks and put a 44 outer ring on and left the original 39 inner on and used it all last season. I did not feel I need a lower gear except for on one killer hill last year. I love the crank so I will just stick with it. Thanks for all your help.

What cassette are you running? That's the other way of getting a lower gear.

i'd imagine he was looking at the chain ring due to cost, as we know what the campy cassettes run. whew.

I run a 12-27. I do not think I can go to a larger cassette unless I get a long cage derailleur

Nevermind then. Just muscle through the tough parts, hike if necessary.

Salsa makes a 38 tooth ring that works on standard shimano road cranks (i think that's a 130 pattern, maybe 135 or whatever). It's clear it's the smallest possible because chainring bolts are right at the base of the teeth.

You could go to a 28 largest rear cog if you wanted to. That one tooth sometimes makes a tangible difference.
