I think you're right on with that. Pretty sure Campy can't go below 39. You can check Speedgoat.com, they generally have a lot of ring options, but I think you may be out of luck. With that, I can't imagine anyone needing smaller than a 39 for cross, whether geared or single.
Thanks guys I never thought about but with 135 BCD and a 36 tooth chainring would not have much material to work with. I took one of my old Record cranks and put a 44 outer ring on and left the original 39 inner on and used it all last season. I did not feel I need a lower gear except for on one killer hill last year. I love the crank so I will just stick with it. Thanks for all your help.
Salsa makes a 38 tooth ring that works on standard shimano road cranks (i think that's a 130 pattern, maybe 135 or whatever). It's clear it's the smallest possible because chainring bolts are right at the base of the teeth.
