check out what i found on Saturday. it's a track funny bike that was used to set the "flying" record with back in about 1986. it takes a 700c disc rear and a 26" front. can anybody tell me any thing else about it? i took these photos as soon as i got home so it's extremely dirty right now.

What a project...

http://www.yellowjersey.org/konno.html is about the only site I have found with good info on 3Rensho-s.

No info on the Flying Record beyond what google brings up.

Where did you come across the frame? Are you restoring it original/velo riding or street?

Very interested in final outcome. I'd love to add its likeness (and a bit of history) to my website.

Is the distance between the front wheel and the fork crown an illusion?

apparently the guy who set the record on this was named Roy Riley. i picked this up at a swap meet. i also got a Campy rear disk wheel which would be really nice on this i think.

once i get it cleaned up a little you're welcome to post the photos on your site.

the the tire is flat but the distance from the top of the rim to the bottom of the crown is 1-3/4". i think the wheel is 26" but it might be 650c. i'm not sure they had 650c in the mid 80's though.

Most likely a 650

Though most of the 3Rensho's I've seen were 24's.

When I get home I'll do some measuring and you can compare by the length of the fork.

Again, Great find...

that's a very interesting, in a cool way, bb shell.

man all this 3rensho talk is getting me excited to get a friends rensho he's selling to me. going thursday to check it out and hopefully pick it up. just got to figure out how to pay for it since i just blew my stash of cash for an early 30's malvern star. but a 3rensho is something i can't pass up.

Wow.

Yellow Jersey in Madison Wi imported a lot of 3Rensho in the early 80's timeframe

From their website- go to their site navigation page, and you can find a couple of very interesting pages, including what the decals look like- they may still have some for sale.

Myself- I have an Athlete frame that I'm converting to fixed gear. Unless somebody talks me out of it, I'm gonna remove the downtube shifter bosses...

Honestly, I don't think the Athlete frame is that valuable- the lugwork and workmanship are fabulous... Ishiwata tubes... mmmm.

Yes, Rory was a big track name back in the 80's. I know that there is a "Flying 200" in the USCF. There might be a flying 500 in international competition.
"Flying" means a flying start, not a "held" start, like the "Kilo"
If it fits, it'll make a great track bike. It will not make a good "fixie".

yeup, thats the Rory. big track star and olypian. i'm trying to get his contact info so i could get the details of exactly which flying race he held or holds the record in.

the big bummer of it all is that it's too big for me :( . still might keep it as a decoration though. once cleaned up this will be a gorgeous bike.

i talked to Rory, last night on the phone. he confirmed that this was his bike. he doesn't really remember which flying record he broke with this bike since he broke so many records. must be nice huh. anyway, he's pretty sure it was an American record since he wasn't yet going for the world records at that time.
