I have both SRAM and Shimano 4mm shifter housing and can't get my 4mm brass ferrules to slip over the housing, even with a fair amount of force. The calipers say that the OD of both brands of housing are consistently slightly over 4mm and generally in the 4.2mm range. I checked the ID of the ferrules and consistently get around 4.07 - 4.08.
Is this a common problem? Ferrules are Nashbar house brand but they appear to be on spec unlike the housing.

Try a different 'brand' of ferrule. Maybe your LBS has one to try. I've never had a problem fitting ferrules.

I couldn't fit my Campagnolo housing into my Ti bike ferrules. So I trimmed off the plastic housing cover, even with the end of the ferrule, and used some wraps of masking tape around the trimmed housing to make it fit.

You'd think it would all be compatible...

I've done the same with good results. Give it a try OP.
