8 sp cassette, 9 sp derailleur

Ha! Beat you to it this time, PJ. I did check Sheldon's site, but his statement that using a narrower chain "rarely presents any problems" led me here to seek the wisdom/experience of the masses

Had an Shimano LX RD/SRAM R8 combo and used both 8-speed and 9-speed SRAM chains without any noticeable changes on my hybrid

Main reason I had a 9 speed chain because I thought I was going to finally get to moving up to 9-speed stuff. But I got lazy, got another bike, never found problems, and meh
