Are 9 speed cranks/chainrings are compatible with an 8 speed cassette/chain?

I was running a Bontrager (Truvative) 9-10 compact crank on a Campy 8 speed setup. The 8 speed chain would rub the outer ring when on the inner ring and the third cog in (a usefull gear). I switched to a 9 speed chain and problem solved. It's pretty much the case that you can run a 9 speed chain on any 8 speed cassette.
