I've been searching for some inspiration lately.

For some reason, I've always waited for it to come to me. As you can imagine, I end up doing a lot of waiting.

Yesterday I walked around for an hour or so with the camera and was kind of bumming that I didn't really find much of anything that I wanted to take a photo of.

Today I was lazing around and decided to take a long walk. I walked around for about three hours today, just snapping away at random things around my town.

I need to do this more often. I didn't come up with anything great, but every picture I take makes me better. And the more things I find that I'm not good at help me find the things that I am good at.

So here are a few shots that I went through. I may be adding more to my site later on, but this is it for the time being.

I'm trying some new things here... first of all, I made a commitment to myself when i took these pictures that I wasn't going to crop anything. I don't know why, but I just felt that I was relying on it to much and I wanted to see what I would do if I had to fill the entire frame. Often times I would take a shot knowing that I was going to crop something in one way or another. I'd do it to hide people or light posts or whatever. ust wanted to give it a shot, so here they are.

I'm not sure what people are using to write with all over the streets, but the bright lettering in different colors is all over the place, and I think it looks pretty cool on the drab sidewalks and electrical boxes.

Maybe the pop art exhibit inspired this one. I have another one where you can't see my refection in it because I bumped the saturation so high, but I like this one more for some reason.

Thanks all!

Not too sure if I went overboard with the saturation on these... I was pushing the limits for sure... but I'm not sure if it's too much.

Good call. One of the things about the critique forum in photoreview.com is that it seems like a lot of folks there are crop-happy, to the point that it's almost a crutch. I may crop an image to get rid of a distracting object near the edge of a frame, but I almost never crop something to change the composition. Maybe one out of several hundred pix. I think if you act like you don't have a crop tool when you're composing, you'll make better compositions.

And obviously that's when shooting pictures without people.

I'm going to take that as a compliment.

Right?

The "what now" reminds me of a couple shots you've posted with a similar composition; silhouettes near the bottom with a lot of open space on the top. You make it work.

Joe, you've got some cool, edgy shots there. I really like where your composition is going.

Funny that you say you are waiting for inspiration - you've already got yourself a couple of photo themes going on - graffiti, sidewalks and shadows. And a good photo exercise is to shoot the alphabet totally in found letterforms - go for as many different type as you can, single out bits of signage, take close-ups of lettering found on manufacturing, shoot different varieties of scale. It's helps you to see what's around you in a different light and you'll have a really nice photo essay at the end of it.

Oh and by the way:

Yellow paint on the ground and the grass shots are really great. The 2 above (graffiti on the floor that preceded the 3rd shot (yellow) ) are also really cool.

I usually don't like graffiti (I can't break the c0l>3), but the "What Now" shot is nice. I like the empty composition that keeps drawing the eye back down like gravity.

The grass, she be beautiful.

Instead of searching for inspiration, you let your legs, mind, and artist's eye wonder and roam, finding inspiration as it appeared to you. Suddenly something just grabs you and Snap! Nice job!
