Below is my newly restored Trek 5500. I had 4 reasons to paint and rebuild it beyond the fact that I really enjoy riding it. First, I hated the oversized and gaudy Trek decals. Second, the original paint was getting a tad roughshod. Third, I had this set of Mike Garcia-built Velocity Aerohead wheels in blue from a bike I recently sold that I really wanted to pair to this red 5500. And 4 - I really wanted to solve the issue of the large Trek decals.

Anyway, let me know what you think - good or bad.

Gave new life to my '98 Trek 5200.

Sent it back to Trek for a repaint and installed Campag Record 10v. with some ES wheels and threw on a Selle Italia carbon 64 saddle.

That's not the famous "sat around Acme for a year" frame is it? If so, it looks like it was worth the wait. If not, it looks like it would've been worth the wait. Nice job, very elegant.

No unfortunately. That frame is the '04 Lemond Tete de Course that has been at Acme here in Portland since July of '04. 18 freakin' months and counting. The 5500 was painted at Class Act Paint and Powder - also here in Portland.

Had a talk with a builder friend of mine about that particular paint place recently - let's just say, you're not alone.

Again though - that Trek is beeyouteeful, nice job.

I'm enjoying it very much indeed and currently planning on some new wheels for it with DT Swiss R1.1 rims and Am. Classic hubs.

This rebuild was done on the cheap. Paintjob was $250, graphics $30. Everything else was from the original bike except the Deda Alanera bars and the FSA crank - which were borrowed from the build kit for the Tete.

Hey Terry - great to see you are still hanging here in cyberland.

The story with the Tete? In a nutshell, I wanted the best. I've been waiting for it ever since. Won't be waiting much longer though. Let's just say that my enthusiasm and willingness to be patient has been sucked dry. And since I've gotten 2 nice paint jobs in the last month from another source, I'm probably going to be taking my ball and going home.

Gawd I want to finish and ride that bike.....this year.

I agree. I come here for valuable discussions and some good down-to-earth bike talk. Some of the "other" forums (maybe we're thinking of different forums, but the same argument likely applies) have become so frustrating that I'm considering stepping away completely. There are some worthy discussions at a certain other forum, but the trolls are bringing it down.
