show up at the LBS yesterday afternoon for the 2nd job, and i can barely make it through the front door due to about 6 fixies and their junior highschool riders.

their sisters jeans? check
odd hipster clothing? check
mismatched, oddly colored bikes? check
53:12  my knees! gearing? check

one thing that made me smile: 6 more kids on bikes, at a bike shop, wrenching their own and NOT at home playing video games.

were they wearing helments?
yup. with tragically ironic stickers and paint on them. all skater helmets or something that screams "send me back to the 80s".

one more funny- they all have a partially working brake on their bikes. why? it's illegal not to have brakes on a bike in our city, and the LBS wont let them out of the door w/o one. do they work? kinda :D

Did any of them have a "No Fat Chicks" sticker? I always wanted one of those for my skateboard in the mid-late 80s but mom said NEGATORY.

Gotta agree with you on that one! Just my personal observation, but in this bicycle-crazed city (Tucson) I see hardly any kids younger than college age riding road bikes. Some teen boys riding their BMX bikes but that's more for trasport rather than sport, I assume. It feels like it's mostly the older folks who are into riding, so anything that gets the kids interested in the sport is o.k. by me.

nope, but lots of freebie Thule stickers that just say "BIKE" stuck in the spokes and/or intentionally sloppily placement on the frame and/or helmet.

and I gotta agree with you...when I am out riding on a stinking hot, humid day or windy day or anything put perfect conditions, the ONLY riders I see out are the gray hairs...and i can honestly say that other than the boys and girls riding out of Trek on their lunch hour, I almost never see a rider under the age of 40 or so.

Apparently fixie riders like to make fun of roadies as much as we like to make fun of them.

Here's a pic from one of their blogs, complete with '80s 'hawtness':

The problem is that there's nothing wrong with that photo at all, other than the seat being too high.

I think you got it right at the end of the poast, those kids are silly stuff, but, as long as they are riding bikes, I am happy...

And, not flying out into the middle of intersections because they have no brakes, with no lights at night because they are ugly and...
