I've been commuting on my MTB with slick tires, but I recently (by recently, I mean about 10 minutes ago) inherited an 80's Schwinn World frame...I'd like to build it into a commuter, but I have no idea where to start.

I've built bikes before, but I have no clue where to acquire parts for an older bike. I'd like to get used parts, because I just bought a new racing bike, so I'm on a strict budget :-( I've been looking at e-bay, but there seems to be a shortage of used and cheap parts. I've also checked with two local bike shops, and neither keeps a stock of old parts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sources for older components

I have an early 80's road touring bike and have similar challenges getting parts. The newer bike shops in town couldn't help me but have offered to special order parts if necessary. Shops that have been around for 30 years are much more helpful... deal with the owner, not the sales clerk who may be younger than the bike. My challenge... I'm in Canada and can't always find these parts up here so I've had to figure out what I want on the internet, special order it from a retailer just across the border, then drive down (after a l-o-n-g border wait) to pick it up.

Also, try the various online bike websites (www.bikenashbar.com, www.performancebike.com.

For hard to find parts, try: http://sheldonbrown.com or http://www.loosescrews.com

Good luck.
