I ride a Specialized Allez Elite triple. I weigh 220 and knew that sooner or later the ALX298s would give me trouble. Any suggestions to stay somewhat light but something that will last a few seasons for a 220 lb-er that rides 200 -300 miles a week? Unfortunately, my budget is only $400, maybe $500 max.

Thanks!!!

From a fellow lightweight

I say Mavic Open Pro with Ultegra Hub, 32 3x double butted.
Brass nipples, Silver spokes, black rims
Costs in the $240 range
I would save the money and NOT get a durace hub.
I weigh 215 ride 7500 plus miles a year, commute when possible 48 miles round trip.

If worried go to a 36 spoke in the back.

Never broke a spoke on them.

Good luck Rob

That's a lot of miles and weight, and I suspect you'd be pushing it to get "a few seasons" out of Open Pros (especially the rear). Ultegra hubs are fine, but for a strong inexpensive rim, try the Velocity Deep V. Don't worry about the weight, but you must, you could go a bit lighter (like the Velocity Fusion) up front. Use 32 3x DT Comps front and rear.

I second the deep-v's. You might try the aerohead rim as well. I ride both and with campy hubs and stainless spokes I get them maintenanced once a year.
