Tire is 700-28
Factory tube was 700-25
I installed a 700-18 because it's what I had on hand.

Talked with two different shops and both said it wasn't a big deal.

Any differing opinions and why?

If the tube was normal size, and you ran over something sharp, it might go Psssssssssss.
With a tube that small, it would go........BANG.
No big deal.

Furthermore, you'll have to pump it up more often because it will lose air faster.

BTW, are you sure that the tube doesn't list a range of tire sizes rather than just one?

It may have on the box but the box was long gone.

When I bought the bike a few months ago and told'em I'd like to have an extra tube that was what they handed me. Didn't notice that it was a smaller size until I was changing it.

It would probably work if you have to use it now, but tubes are cheap enough so you might as well get the correct size. In fact get a few extras as you will probably get flats from time to time. Also you should carry a spare with you on any decent length ride.

Just rode my steed over the local bike shop and picked up a couple of 700x25-30's.

Good to go, now.
