Hello, I'm looking to purchase a bike rack from Allen (model 303D) because it mounts on the spare tire in the rear. Its for my wife's car, a honda CRV, and will make it easier to handle the bikes, especially for her. I have a Thule on my car's rooftop and I've been very happy with it. I'm not familiar with the brand Allen. Anyone care to comment on the Allen?

I had one, 103A trunk rack, and found it to be a good rack. Nothing fancy. I had to use a few bungee cords, but nothing unusal. I first used it on a Oldsmobile Ceria, then a Ford Escort, Buick Century, Oldsmobile Silloutte, and a Honda Oddyssey (1st gen). I still have it mounted to the wall in my garage to store my road bike on and use as a homemade repair stand. Allen has a good warrenty, damn near a no questions asked warrenty.

My first preference would be a Thule rack. A quick eBay search turned up a spare tire rack with a 'Buy it Now" of $59.99. I prefer the fact that you use the lug nut holding the spare tire to mount the rack. It seems a lot more secure that the strap method that Allen uses. Personally, I use roof mounted racks, but that's just my preferred method of transport.

Still, if I had my heart set on an Allen, $70.00 is an amount I would be comfortable with.
