They came with a bike second hand. I didn't notice it till I took the bar tape off. I haven't ridden them.
It looks as though the broken and cracked areas may just be fairings that wouldn't affect structural strength but I don't know for sure. I have seen carbon bars that don't have this bit.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Can I do a strength test at home?

I'm not sure I'm looking at what you are looking at. The cover is "glued" to the bar over the tunnel so all the black that you see is not an issue. Once again I'm not too sure but there may be a hairline crack in the bar at the end of the cover.

I would not ride them.

A respectable carbon bar is $200.

How much is your emergency room co pay?

How much is that kit you are wear going to cost to replace?

How much was your saddle?

All things to consider when you don't want to spend that $200. You can always go Al for $100 or so

Them bars look cracked to me... OUT TO THE TRASH they go...
