i've been looking to get some 105 components off the bay and I've noticed that they look different from the pics shimano has on its site and that they are really really really cheap compared to my lbs prices, I especially noticed how the 105 cranks on ebay look really different from what shimano has on its site, might these be fakes or just production variants

Shimano website = only the latest stuff.

Yep, those are genuine Shimano 9-speed 105 Octalink cranks. Nashbar (aka "Performance dumping ground") had 'em on sale for $40 or so until a few days ago. I guess they ran out. For older stuff on Shimano's web site, go to 'Technical Documents.'
