Thinking about BMacksaw's Zeppelin thread got me thinking.

Name some bands that you feel stopped doing anything worthwhile long before they stopped putting out records. Name their last worthwhile record.

The more inflammatory the better, I say.

I'll start (though perhaps my choices aren't all that inflammatory):

The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Mother's Milk (and that one just barely counts)

REM: Life's Rich Pageant

It pains me to say this but I ll throw out Oasis. They still are my fav band but after much of their "new" stuff is very hit or miss. First 3 albums were all really REALLY good as a whole. Then we got Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Heathen Chemistry which both just flat out sucked. Their last two offerings (Dont believe the Truth and the newest album Dig out your Soul) were a step an a better direction. All in all they ve lost some of their luster. They need to get back to the old stuff and stop trying to do all this new age psychodelic crap.

Wow--cut right to the flameproof suit stuff, eh?

My friend's rule of thumb - of which there are exceptions of course - is that most bands start going downhill after the third album.

If your question is "ended for me" then -

The Stones after Exile on Main Street.
The Beatles after Abbey Road
Led Zep after Physical Graffiti
Neil Young after Zuma

Not saying they didn't do anything worth listening to beyond those, but for all intents and purposes, they were dead to me.

In most cases I don't disagree with this.

I figured I'd start it off right! :D I like bits and pieces of their stuff after that but it was markedly different from that point forward.

I think LRP was the best REM record.

Um ... wasn't there only one more album after that anyway? "Let it Be"?
Not only that..."let it be" had...friggin' Let it Be on it! Now I know the Beatles have many anthems...but you cannot have one of them be--after--someone says you jumped the shark...and still suggest that the band jumped the shark.

I have 3 from the recent album on the 'pod that are pretty goon IMO: Bag It Up, I'm Outa Time, and Falling Down. From a recent interview in Guitar World mag, Noel said he pretty much gave up writing songs, leaving it up to Liam.
