ROCK! I had a set from the days before STI shifters came out, and have not used them since. Actually STI was out but ridiculous expensive and SIS bar ends were supposed to be the next best thing, I was low on cash so i bought. Used them on a trainer bike for a while. I read a thread recently about the ultimate touring bike and most who responded went with barends. I have been using DT shifters on my retro ride for a few years since the restore, but decided to turn the retro into a full on tour/commuter, so i gave it barends. Seem to shift so much smoother than the DT, not a whole lot of trimming to do either. The old bike just got a bit more enjoyable to ride, found a 3TTT 130 stem, old skool Pletscher alu rack, just ordered up a trunk bag.....got a brass bell for it, just a few more items needed, fenders and a Sugino crank.
