Recent threads about guys asking out coffee shop workers and about guys going to strip places have made me think: Would I rather have my now-teenaged daughters when they are in college have jobs as baristas or strippers? Putting aside the facts that: (1) Starbucks and its kind are probably much better to their employees than what I would imagine the owner of the typical strip club would be to his or her employees; and (2) the average barista is much more likely to be a college student working part-time as opposed to being a crack addict who has no future, I wonder whether baristas are being hit upon by men more than stipppers are? Strip clubs patrons, for the most part, realize that the whole set up is an illusion/fantasy and there usually are large bouncers nearby to keep anyone else in line. I don't see any bouncer-types at Starbucks. From what I am reading here it sounds like baristas are being hit upon by men every day. And, there does not appear to be any protection for the baristas, such as bouncers found in strip clubs. Am I missing anything?

But what is the problem with a female getting hit on as a barista? As long as its words...they are just being nice, and will probably get a nice tip. Words don't hurt.

Strippers need bouncers based on the unruly, drunk ppl who usually stumble in there (oh, did I mention they are nude?)

Here's the honest truth. Your daughters, if they are good looking, will get hit on wherever they go and no matter where they work. It's just the honest truth. Women who can't handle getting hit on need to get over themselves.

You do not, as a person, have a right to not be hit on. You do have a right not to be harassed, but c'mon ... asking someone out or complimenting them is just that - a compliment. So what if someone has an ulterior motive? Who gives a ****? I am sick and tired of everyone here acting like the woman in this situation has no recourse. If you're hit on and don't like it, politely turn the guy down. If he keeps hitting on you, it's become harassment, at which case you can exit the situation, notify your manager, etc.

A stripper, Mark? Really? That's just ridiculous. Yes, I got hit on as a barista. Yes, I get hit on when I just want to hang out with my friends. Women get hit on. Even men get hit on. Deal with it already, geez.

There were some strippers in skimpy outfits at some of the ohio state pregame parties yesterday handing out get in free passes. It was cold out and they were turning heads left and right.

I think the problem comes down to people not wanting to be hit on by people they are not attracted to. God forbid a clydes asks a tri-cyclist out for a cup of coffee...Thats mixing the genetics too much. I get this ALOT in LA....(and i wish i was skinny enough to be a clydes!)

If I had a daughter (there hasn't been a female child in my direct family in four generations), I would prefer that they had a part time job as a bike messenger. Retail jobs stink, and a job as a stripper will surely screw you up, later in life.

thanks, I appreciate it. Especially after just reading Adorno for my educational philosophy class where all he talks about is how teachers get no respect. I personally couldn't disagree more, I have always had the utmost respect for teachers, maybe bc my mom taught elementary school her whole life, and my dad's a professor.

I won't lie, in making my decision to change careers, the ability to live (more or less) where I want to, and have summers off were factors, but definitely not the primary one.

The exception though is when you are in circumstances where you feel threatened/unsafe by being hit on... eg. if you are walking alone, or cycling or, even in a room alone. In those instances, what might just be a flirty and harmless compliment and is normally laughed off can make a chick feel really uncomfortable.
