Following the lead of the likes of Giro and Smith, Bell has added MIPS technology to its Gage road helmet. MIPS or multi-directional impact protection system is designed to lower rotational forces on the head in the instance of an impact.
The updated helmets made their debut on top of the LottoNL-Jumbo professional cycling team at the start of this year's Tour de France. The Gage with MIPS is the fifth Bell helmet to use the protection system. Bell invested in the Swedish company last August.
"If it makes the helmet perform better, then I want to use it," said Steven Kruijswijk of Team LottoNL-Jumbo. "The peloton is a dangerous place with so many crashes, and anything that addresses my safety is important to me."
First released in 2012, the Bell Gage helmet features channeled ventilation, a two-way adjustable Twin Axis Gear (TAG) fit system, moisture-wicking X-Static padding, and lightweight Cam-Locks. The helmet has 26 vents and weighs a claimed 240 grams.
The patented MIPS technology was developed through a collaboration between Swedish engineers and a Swedish neuroscientist, and according to Bell, addresses angled impacts and rotational forces to the brain. Concussions and brain injuries are often caused by rotational forces to the brain during an impact to the head. MIPS utilizes a low friction layer on the inside of the helmet to absorb some of the energy created by angled blows to the head. By mimicking the brain's own protective mechanism, MIPS can provide an additional measure of protection in some impacts.
The Gage with MIPS will be available in three sizes and is CPSC and CE EN1078 certified. Color options will include Black/Red Cadence, Tahoe Blue, and Matte Black Ombre. Price is $195 and it will be available starting August 1.
