Have any of you guys ever ordered from BikeSmart?

They want a digital image of my credit card, front and back, as well as an my drivers license.

Has anyone else ever come across this?

That's not something I'd feel good about transmitting over the interwebs--it wouldn't be secure like an HTTPS/SSL transaction would. And it doesn't add security, since you could have stolen a wallet, and would then have both card and ID.

I don't like the smell of it.

Will they take your order over the phone?

Also--I just looked, and their policies page doesn't say anything about this rigamarole. That page implies it'll be a regular internet transaction.

I definitely wouldn't do this one--could be part of their checkout got jacked and is re-routing you to someone nefarious.

Thats....

Kinda the same way I was thinking...

Here's the email I rec'd...

<tt><tt>Thank you for shopping with BikeSmart. While your card authorization
was
successful, we are unable to process your order due to a negative
Address
Verification System response. The Address Verification System is an
additional measure we use to combat credit card fraud. This service
checks
the street address and zip code entered in the billing information
field and
cross references that information with the card issuers records. In
your
case, their was either not a match (US customers), or your card issuer
does
not participate in the AVS program (International customers).

US cardholders only:

The best way to deal with this issue is to first contact your card
issuer
and verify the address and zip code they have on file, this is usually
the
source of negative AVS responses.

International cardholders only:

Due to the issues involved with international identity confirmation, we
require a digital copy of the credit card (front and back) that was
used to
make the purchase, as well as a copy of a valid photo identification
card
(i.e. Passport, Driver’s License, Military ID, etc). To send the
images,
please use our secure upload page-
http://www.bikesmart.com/index.cfm?menu=intl_order, entering your
username,
password, and order number. MAKE SURE TO USE NO SPACE CHARACTERS IN
THE
FILENAME. You will only need to submit your information once, after
that you
are considered verified for all future transactions.

Thank you for your cooperation,

415-257-4293 (fax)</tt></tt></pre>I know that's its a secure transaction, but a secure transaction to who? I guess I will call them.

Only international customers need to do all that stuff, and they do have a secure (allegedly) place to upload the images, so that's not as bad.

They're just being hyper-vigilant--a lot of credit card processors are being real dicks about security these days, so it's really kind of hard to do business with the sloppy typists out there.

You'll probably be fine if you call them on the phone.

Canada? Man, I can't believe anyone in Canada mail-orders anything from the US. Duties and such kill you guys, don't they?
