The new Boardman Elite Series SLS/9.8 is the flagship model in the company's new endurance series.

U.K.-based Boardman has lifted the lid on its new 2014 Elite Series, which now includes six different platforms, the already-released AiR (aerodynamic racing), AiR/TT (aerodynamic racing) and SLR (superlight racing) platforms and the all-new SLS, CXR and AiR/TTE models.

The SLS (superlight endurance series) is branded as an all-day fast riding endurance frame; the CXR (cyclocross racing) is a multi-terrain bike good for off-road racing and gravel grinding; and the AiR/TTE is a time trial specialist that was designed using computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel testing. Boardman claims the Air/TTE (aerodynamic racing evolution) is 5 percent more aero than the previous AiR/TT.

Developments across the range include revised carbon lay-ups, one-piece bottom brackets, and oversized box section stays for better power transfer. Boardman has also adopted tapered steerers for improved handling, and cleaner cable routing for improved aesthetics and enhanced aero efficiency.

"Genuine improvements have been made across the board," said company namesake Chris Boardman, who was an Olympic gold medal winner, world hour record holder, and multi-time wearer of the Tour de France yellow jersey before he got into the bike building business. "This latest incarnation has been informed by our R&D department over an intensive and extensive period of more than two years. We've utilised the latest CAD, CFD and FEA technologies and combined with non-traditional cycling industry knowledge as part of the process."

The new SLS, SLR and CXR Elite Series models will be available starting in December, with further models being added early in the New Year and the AiR/TTE will be available in Spring 2014. As of this writing, Boardman bikes are available in five U.S. independent bicycle dealers - two in California, plus one each in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. (Anyone outside that region can purchase through Southern California-based Nytro, which has an extensive on-line retail operation in addition to its bricks and mortar location in Encinitas.)
