Apparently, the world is full of loungers.

"A proposal by a British government agency to let the Internet suggest a name for a $287 million polar research ship probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, the agency is the latest group to see what happens when web users are asked to unleash their creative energy: R.R.S. Boaty McBoatface is a clear front-runner.
People quickly disregarded the more dignified names suggested by the Natural Environment Research Council — Shackleton, Endeavour, Falcon. Instead the contest became the latest in the Internet’s long, storied history to end up with social media users gleefully offering ridiculous names to government-funded projects.
The initiatives are often hilarious but don’t often succeed. Remember when Slovak lawmakers overrode the public’s vote in 2012 to rename a pedestrian bridge after the actor Chuck Norris? Or the debacle in Austin, Tex., a year earlier, when people unsuccessfully tried to name the city’s waste management service after Limp Bizkit’s frontman, Fred Durst?..."

I kind of like Boaty McBoatface :)

Seriously, sometimes, a little humor needs to be injected... Can you just imagine the huge smile on any harbormasters face when they are requesting to dock...

With the snout on that ship, it is kind of boat-faced. I feel a little badly for it...Imagine all the whispering when all the beautiful sailboats see him pulling into harbour.

I think a great name would be ASFOS.
Another Stupid Federal Overpaid Study
Maybe you should read the article and learn that the vessel is British and not American. Naw, we need to keep up the uninformed American stereotype

simple-minded people suggesting silly names for a research vessel...? not all that surprising.

they're probably the same dim-witted types that, when they know a tv camera is aimed at them, wave frantically and make stupid faces...

The problem I have with this is not that it has turned into a joke, it's that the joke is so lame. Boaty McBoatFace?? Really?? That sounds like something a 5 year old came up with.

I like it. It looks like it's from a Thomas the Tank Engine story and the name fits. Cheeky Boat!

BTW, article states it "sets sail" in 2019. No sails on that one.

I like how powerboaters would have some fun with their boat names. My boats were named Tinytanic, and Paws or Thought, and many of the other cruisers around here was crazier and racier than that. But all the stuck up blowboaters (sailboats) had serious sounding unfunny new-age or sentimental names. guess it suits the personalities? (now calm down, I know some blowboaters had fun boat names and great parties too)

I vote Boaty McBoatface. take it to the bank

We are looking at 50+ foot sailboats.. but definately are not stuck up, but I think Boaty McBoatface might be an option if they don't use it :) I'll make sure to paint a giant cartoon smileface on the bow :)
