Bontrager Approved TLR Disc 24h recall

Maybe it's just me preferring to err on the side of caution but 24H seems kind of sparse on a disc brake bike marketed as adventure/touring.

No kidding. Front maybe but certainly not rear.
The recall is three model years so 'bad batch of spokes' is very unlikely the excuse. Spoke count err on the side of stupid would be my guess as to the cause.

I agree. I also think it's foolish to run 16/20 spoke road wheels, but that is quite common as well.
Spoke breakage is nothing new or unusual for Bontrager wheels. Neither is spoke hole cracking.

I am not privy to the details but the reason behind the recall may be deeper than just the spoke count.
I am of this opinion because the recall does not include the Affinity series TLRs (step up from Approved) which are using the same count of spokes although DT 14/15ga DB, a different rim with asymetric spoke bed and locking niples.
Although my personal absolute minimum for conventional disc wheels is 28f/28r, the Affinity series TLRs get good long term reviews; no personal experience though.
Something else othar than just mere spoke count seems, to me at least, to be happening with the Approved series. The actual components used for the Approved series are not disclosed to any detail other than the rim weight @ 525 grams.

I ride a set of Pacenti SL25 with BHS hubs, 24 spoke Sapim Lasers with alloy nipples on my daily commuter in NYC. ~100 miles/week. I weigh around 160 and with the panniers filled with crap and bike the wheels are probably supporting 190 or so pounds. Sort of just an experiment to see if they do break. No issues yet.
I have a set of these on my Crockett 7 Disc. Two sets actually as I bought a second set for road tires. All four had a short life under my 200lb use. I recommend going to Peformance Bike and getting a set of Stan's Grail Disc wheels for $320, great bang for the buck!
