Tonight I was kind of bored, so i went out to see if I couldn't get some decent pictures.

I came back home with total crap. I guess it doesn't help that I'm left eyed and that my prescription in my left eye has changed significantly... doesn't work too well in low light.

Anyways, I decided to tool around with NX2. I'd watched a video on Kelby Training explaining NX2 a bit better so I thought I'd screw around with a couple of photos to see if I could improve them. Most everything is straight from camera with tweaks for sharpness, so i figured that screwing around with all the little tools and everything would be fun.

Here is the original of a sunset I took at a park not too long ago. Essentially this is the shot straight out of the camera with very little PP:

<img src="https://www.yodaddio.com/Fancy-Pants/Around-Town/park-14/777320733_fUYgG-L.jpg" border="5">

And here it is after messing around with the color control points:

<img src="https://www.yodaddio.com/Fancy-Pants/Around-Town/park-14-copy/959054829_FyzSs-L.jpg" border="5">

And here is a sunset at the beach from a few months ago. The original (not sure I did any PP on this one):

<img src="https://www.yodaddio.com/Fancy-Pants/Around-Town/balboa-16/778210737_r9MHQ-L.jpg" border="5">

And the edit. I'm thinking I may have gone overkill with this one. But I'll see what y'all think. This one has a lot more done to it than the original. I was kind of using it to test out a lot of what I'd learned in the video, so it may be way over the top.:

So yeah, this is just stuff I'm screwing with because I never really paid it much attention before. Seeing if I can't learn a bit by practicing this on images I've already got versus just trying to learn it by doing it on images I take that day. Not sure if I'm improving anything.

I've hit such a funk in my photo taking. Seems like every time I check the back of the LCD I'm looking at crap. It's getting to be really annoying. I'm hoping for the upswing any month now.

The second one in the first set is definitely an improvement.

The second one in the second set looks a lot more interesting, but the modifications seem to have added a lot of noise, particularly in that dense cloud layer and in the ocean.

But WTF do I know ... I'm colorblind.

I'm also not a real doctor.

And for your troubles, here's a non-butchered Leonard Cohen cover (embedding disabled).

And here's the man, doing a non-butchered cover of his own song.

Yeah, there's a lot going on there. It wasn't a great photo to begin with because of that damn cloud. I tried to get the blue coming in from the top to change in to the orange. I think I pushed it too far and got it all chopped up.

And, it's a grey cloud. It's kind of noisy anyway.

I like em all. You could use better subjects though. Sunsets are meh. Here's something to get the creative juices flowing...taken by my girlfriend last summer.

I'm sure, but at this size the original doesn't look noisy.

That's what she said.

in both cases your saturation tweaks has pushed the sky into the 'unreal' zone.
it is most evident in tweak #2 where your sky is purple
so here ya go
open both images in P-Shop
Put original layer on bottom and copy tweaked layer to top.
Add a layer mask to the top layer
Use the gradient tool (black to transparent) on the layer mask
and pull down from the top, experiment with where you start and stop the gradient
what you will end up with is a saturated sunset but a natural sky color
or you could just get a good capture

That's what I've been going for lately and failing at miserably. I haven't been happy with a single thing I've done lately. I feel like I've been stuck on this mediocre plateau for the past 6 or 8 months.
