Brake cable sheath has a metal nipple on one end. I put this end at the brake lever. After I was done I thought maybe it should go at the brake end because the adjuster twists there and it might turn better on the metal nipple. Is this so, or does it matter?

Every cable housing should have some sort or ferrule on the end of it. Doesn't matter if it's metal or plastic as long as it's there.
For Shimano brake systems (and several other levers and brakes) ferrules are not used at the lever because they prevent proper seating and won't even fit in the brake barrel adjuster.
