I really enjoyed this Atlantic Monthly article about U.S. "soldier-diplomat" coducting foreing policy to advance U.S. interests.

In subtle ways, the article seems to subtlely reject both mainstream foreign policy and military postures from the right and left. Please dont' ask me to substantiate this claim becuase I can't.
