Yesterday, quite by chance, I discovered that I have been riding around with a broken rear axle. First, I'm amazed that I didn't notice anything odd about the way the bike had been handling. I suppose it could have been broken for 5 minutes, or possibly 5 months... I have no idea. Second, I'm amazed that the wheel didn't come loose. I was doing some hill repeats the other day and descending pretty quickly at times. I'm a bit freaked out to think that the only thing holding my wheel together was the quick release. Yikes.
Is this an uncommon thing, or do axles occasionaly break in two? By way of background, I'm 6'3" and 200 pounds. The wheels are Ksyrium SLs with about 10,000 miles on them.
Finally, once I repair the wheel, what type of service should I give it?
Thanks.
