Hi,

I currently have a (Campy Record 10 speed) 53/39 with 170mm crank arm setup.

Is it possible to swap the chain rings to a 50/36 with the same crank arm?

Thanks

No.

Your crank has a 135mm bolt circle diameter (BCD).

Anything less than a 38T chainring needs a "compact" crankset which will have a 110mm BCD.

So to get a 50/34 (Std Campy config) you need a new crankset.

And as a bonus fact - Campy cranks require compatible chainrings - they are not generic.

No. you can't put a ring smaller than 39 teeth on that 135mm spider.

For future reference many things about bicycles are clear if you simply do a close visual inspection. In the case of chain ring sizes, if you look at how your chain runs on the small chain ring you would easily see that nothing smaller than your current 39t ring could be used because the chain would be riding on the end of the crank spider arm that is between the two chain rings. Much about bicycles can be determined by equally simple observation.

The standard compact chainring road setup for Campy, and most other manufacturers is 50/34.

Campy also make a 52/36 combo, though not so widely available.

Wiggle | Campagnolo Athena 11 Speed Power Torque 52/36 Chainset | Chainsets

See also here for a range of Campy crank options. In all likelihood you will have to change out your BB too.

Campy use a proprietary bolt pattern, so any other ring must be compatible with the crankset you get. And it can get complicated. You are better off buying the combo that you want to start with.

Campy also sell CX oriented cranksets with 46/36 rings, such as this:

Wiggle | Campagnolo CX 11 Speed Power Torque Carbon Chainset | Chainsets

And yes, 11-speed cranksets work fine on 10-speed setups.
