I have always run my Campagnolo derailleur cables to the front of the bar, just above the brake cables. I am installing new cables & housing and have noticed that most pros seem to run them to the rear of the bar (my observation is based on photos I see in American & Euro cycling magazines). I am using a bar with dual cable grooves, so running them either way is no big deal.

What do most people here do, and why?

the why..

According to rumor, pro racers complained about the rear routed cable putting pressure on the heel of the hand in the early days of 8 speed ergo. Campy added the front cable routing option and improved the shape of the ergo lever body soon after.

If the bars have a back groove and the cable doesn't bother your hand, then it's OK.

Many carbon bars don't have a back groove or any grooves. Then the front routing makes the most sense. I still apply some thin foam rubber (camper seal) along both sides of the cable to improve comfort.
